Housing Starts up in Waterloo Region

There were 451 housing units started last month according to CMHC.  There was a 164 unit rental apartment building on Fallowfield Drive in Kitchener, an 89 unit condo project on Laurelwood Drive in Waterloo, a 66 rental unit on Glasgow Street in Kitchener and a 27 unit rental apartment building on University Avenue in Waterloo.

According to Erica McLerie, a senior market analyst with CMHC, ” starts of rental apartments and condos rose due to increase in demand from students, immigrants and baby boomers.”

The ecoENERGY grants are back for Retrofit – Homes.  The maximum federal grant is $5000 for applications received since April 2007.  If you have participated before April 1, 2011, and have not received the maximum amount for your current property, you can submit one more application for additional improvements after June 6th, 2011.

First register with Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) at:

2) Hire a local service organization licenced by NRCan to perform a pre-retrofit energy evaluation. (ie) REEP in Waterloo Region, 519-744-9799.

3) Choose, purchase and install eligible measures and keep your receipts.  The more upgrades you do the more money you can receive.

4) Post-retrofit evaluation.  Complete the renovations and obtain a post-retrofit evaluation no later than March 31, 2011.  You must show all your receipts.

40 companies attend Communitech’s Recruiting Event

According to 570 news, on Canada’s Tech Triangle website, there were more than 40 companies attending the recruiting event on August 18th, 2011.  There are regularly over 1000 job openings in the region and Techvibes Recruitment Event is one of a series over events that help companies fill those positions.

There were a number of big name companies that were involved in the event and they are:  Accelerator Centre, Agfa Healthcare, ANTvibes, BOOM digital, Christie Digital, Crawford and Company, Desire2learn, Descartes, EA Games, Equitable Life, Google, IMS, Manulife, McAfee, Sunlife, Sybase, Economical Insurance Group, Virtual Causeway and more.

CIBC reports KWC is 4th in Economic Activity

The article in today’s Record states according to Benjamin Tal, at CIBC World Markets, that KW is 4th out of 25 cities in Economic Activity.

The apartment vacancy rate dips to 2.6% in Waterloo Region

It is a great time to invest in Real Estate in Waterloo Region for several reasons.  First, according to CMHC, the vacancy rate dropped from 3.3% to 2.6% in October.  This means that 26 rental suites out of 1000 in the Region are vacant.  Also, the average rent for a 2 bedroom apartment increased to $872 up from $856 a year earlier. Second, the prime rate remains at 3.0%.  Third, the market is balanced and that means it does not favour the Buyer or the Seller.

REGION REVEALS TRANSIT HUB

The Record’s Jeff Outhit has stated in today’s Record that the Region has purchased lands at King and Victoria for a transit hub.  I always thought the Korean Convenient store was going to be the location for the LRT station.  Here is the full story:
