RIM announced that there will be 2000 employees laid off later this week. Some 50 employees were walked out of their offices in Waterloo and Kitchener by security after receiving their pink slips. RIM is doing their best to reduce expenses, improve revenues and market share. My sincere best wishes go out to the ones who have lost their jobs.

After months of being in the doldrums, RIM has received some good news in regards to the Playbook. The Playbook tablet has been approved by the US federal government according to The Record staff. I found this on The Record’s website today. The government officials are now able to purchase the tablet and know that confidential information will be protected.

The Communitech Hub, a digital media and mobile accelerator centre opened last week at the Tannery Building in downtown Kitchener. It officially opened inside the 30,000 square foot space.
This centre will assist start up tech companies in KW and will have mentorship from fellow high tech companies in KW like RIM, Open Text, Agfa Health Care and Christie Digital.

According to The Record, Dalsa gets $24.3 million dollars from the Province of Ontario to develop the next generation of digital imaging. This funding will help create 114 jobs and support 232 existing jobs. Currently, Dalsa employs 350 people in Waterloo and 1000 world wide.
